Candida is a type of yeast that normally lives in the body in small amounts, including in the gut and in the mouth. In a healthy balance, it lives alongside the good bacteria in the gut and causes no trouble.
Candida overgrowth means the yeast has grown more than usual. When that happens, people commonly describe symptoms such as ongoing fatigue, bloating, brain fog, sugar cravings, and skin or mouth issues. These symptoms overlap with many other conditions, so symptoms alone do not prove candida overgrowth.
Background reading describes candida overgrowth as something that can follow when the body’s normal balance is disturbed — for example, by a diet high in sugar and refined carbohydrates, or by repeated courses of antibiotics. The same background describes how candida can form a protective layer, called biofilm, which makes it harder to clear.
If you think candida may be part of the problem, start with the background before buying anything:
- Symptoms of candida — the commonly described pattern of symptoms.
- The free candida home test — a simple at-home step described on this site. It is background information only, not a diagnosis.
- The candida diet — what the diet involves, and what to eat or avoid.
- How long does it take to get rid of candida? — the phased plan described in the background reading.
Talk with your own qualified healthcare professional about symptoms that persist or worry you, and before starting any supplement or new diet.
