Not all urinary tract infections are bacterial. Candida can infect the urinary tract, causing symptoms that closely mimic bacterial UTIs including burning during urination, urinary frequency and urgency, lower abdominal discomfort, and even blood in the urine. Candida UTIs are particularly common in women, people with diabetes, and anyone who has taken multiple rounds of antibiotics.
Standard UTI testing often misses fungal infections unless specifically requested. The dipstick tests and standard urine cultures used in most clinics are designed to detect bacteria, not yeast. If you experience recurrent UTIs that keep coming back after antibiotic treatment, or if standard tests come back negative despite ongoing symptoms, Candida should be on your radar.
Risk factors for Candida UTIs include recent antibiotic use, hormonal fluctuations (pregnancy, menopause, oral contraceptives), diabetes, catheter use, and a diet high in sugar and refined carbohydrates. The hormonal component is particularly significant — estrogen fluctuations alter the vaginal and urinary microbiome, creating conditions where Candida can thrive.
Treatment for Candida UTIs requires antifungal medications rather than antibiotics. However, addressing the underlying factors that allowed the overgrowth is equally important. This includes reducing dietary sugar, supporting the immune system, restoring healthy gut flora with probiotics, and addressing any biofilms that may be protecting the yeast.
Prevention strategies include staying well-hydrated to flush the urinary tract, avoiding unnecessary antibiotics, managing blood sugar levels, and maintaining a healthy gut microbiome through diet and targeted supplementation.

Recurrent UTIs that antibiotics will not fix? They might not be bacterial at all. Candida can infect the urinary tract causing identical symptoms. If standard tests keep coming back negative, test for yeast.
